A Family Affair: Lisa and Coulson’s Story

A student in Vatterott’s Vet Tech program, Lisa Merrill loves animals. She learned about Gateway Pet Guardians through our partnership with the college, where homeless animals receive medical care and socialization from students during a short stay before entering foster. Lisa took a leap of faith and filled out an application, and within a month has already opened her home to two foster…

Congratulations 2016 Volunteers of the Year – GPG Program Leads

Each year, Gateway Pet Guardians chooses honorees to spotlight at the annual Soiree for Strays Gala.  We look deeply at our volunteers and supporters and choose the person/family/organization that has extraordinarily helped us over the year (or more) make the biggest impact we could.  We have four categories of honorees that we feel best summarize those people that support us so passionately…

The Gift of Good Health: Jessi and Forte’s Story

About six years ago, a little puppy named Forte was adopted by a man who loved him dearly. Forte lived six happy years with his adopted dad, but their time together wasn’t always easy. As Forte grew older, he started experiencing health issues, enduring tests and visit after visit with veterinary specialists. Forte was throwing up 3-4 times daily. He went from 65 pounds down to 40 pounds,…

Happy Families, Healthy Pets: Jones Park Vaccination Clinic 2016

On Saturday, October 22, we were set up at Jones Park in East St. Louis for the second clinic of 2016. In addition to providing vaccinations, we talked with residents…

Happy Tails Update: Doozy

From forever mom Annie Hutchison:

“We adopted Peaches, formerly known as Doozy, at the beginning of September. We looked for the right pup for our family for a very long time. When we met Doozy, she was the sweetest little girl and stole our hearts right away. I thought she was too good to be true! Now, almost two months later, her name is Peaches and she is soooo loved by our family. S…

Taking a Chance on Love: Brittany and Ice’s Story

The Gateway Pet Guardians Emergency Shelter houses thirteen kennels and a small play yard in the back, complete with turf and toys. The shelter staff and volunteers work to enrich the lives of the dogs by hosting play groups and taking them on lengthy walks. We carefully assess the behavior of all dogs who come into our care. Sometimes in order to protect them, we have to consider some dogs “dog…

Gigi’s Journey: A Happy Tail

Gigi was rescued from St. Clair County Animal Control on April 29, 2016. She was sent to one of our partner vet tech schools to stay and be cared for until a foster home opened up. Estimated to be between 7-10 years old, Gigi started to decline at the vet school, showing signs of kidney disease. Concerned for her well being, we put out a plea for a special foster, a home where she could relax.

Every journey is unlike any other, because each is different in its own way. This is Ethan and DeeDee’s story.

DeeDee was rescued from Animal Control on January 22, 2016. She spent a few months…
