Bi-State Pet Food Pantry Partnership

In September 2016, Gateway Pet Guardians and Bi-State Pet Food Pantry formed a partnership to bring pet food services to the Metro East community. Once a month, residents who qualify for the program pick up a month’s supply of food. Last weekend we distributed food to 18 families, including 750 pounds of dog food and 42 pounds of cat food.

Rescue’s #1 Fan: Catalina and Scruffy’s Story

Life can be busy. Crazy busy. And we often hear people say they don’t have time to foster. That might be true, but we’ve also met many individuals who have made it work, despite their busy lives. Recent high school graduate Catalina Cuevas is one such person. With a busy school and social life, she made time to foster adorable little Mr. McScrufferPants. And thanks to her sacrifice, this…

What breed is that?

Ohhhhh how I loathe that question most days!  Is it a lab mix?  A boxer mix?  No, no, it’s definitely a pit bull.  Wait, what is a pit bull?  Isn’t a pit bull a made up breed?  Ugh.  So many unknowns.

A few years back, we coined our own term for our mixed breed masterpieces… The Eastie.  What is an Eastie, you ask?  An East St. Louis Mutt.  A beautiful mixture of German Shepherd,…

Happy Families, Healthy Pets: Lincoln Park Vaccination Clinic 2017

Our vaccination clinics play an important role in our community program. We are able to host two clinics each year, and this past weekend marked the first vaccination clinic of 2017. We set up bright and early at Lincoln Park in East St. Louis, where we vaccinated 100 community pets in our service area and signed up about 30 pets for spay/neuter surgeries. In addition to providing vaccinations,…

Spunky, but Sweet: Taylor and Audrey Hepburn’s Story

Sometimes, dogs have an extended stay at the Gateway Pet Guardians Emergency Shelter. But shelter life can be hard, especially when it’s longer term. To help dogs deal with this stress, we created the Shelter Guardian Program nearly three years ago. This program is designed to enhance the lives of shelter animals by pairing them with a volunteer for socialization, training, enrichment and…

Making an Impact in April: Our Community Outreach Program

If April showers bring May flowers, what will May flowers bring? A question the Gateway Pet Guardians Community Outreach Team is eager to find out. The past several weeks we have worked, despite the weather, to deliver supplies to community members and pets in need, making 47 unique stops and adding 22 new cases to our list. The graphic on this page highlights the supplies that were delivered…

She Knows No Stranger: Missy and Natalie’s Story

In early January, an adorable white pit bull mix was rescued from Animal Control. This bouncy, lovable pup was truly a magnet to people. She knew no stranger. She greeted every single person that walked through her kennel door at our Emergency Shelter. And that happy-go-lucky personality won over many volunteers, including foster mom Missy Cissell, who simply could not say no to this precious…

Canvassing in the Metro East

Volunteers didn’t let the rain stop them from canvassing in the Metro East this past weekend! On Saturday and Sunday, four groups hit the streets, delivering flyers door to door to spread awareness about our upcoming vaccination clinic in Lincoln Park on May 13, 2017. Eleven volunteers delivered 700+ flyers, and we’ll have more out again next weekend hitting a different area of the city.
