Microchips Save Lives: Missy’s Story

We have a happy story to share! We found this four-month-old puppy running around in East St. Louis in the frigid cold. We picked her up and took her to the vet, where we discovered a microchip. The chip wasn’t registered, but we tracked down the owner thanks to our friends at Carol House Quick Fix Pet Clinic, since the pup was fixed and microchipped at their facility. We found the owners and…

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Princess Rowdy’s Story

We received a call from a woman in the Metro East concerned about her dogs. She had fallen on hard times. Her husband was diagnosed with MRSA and had been in and out of the hospital having surgeries. Two of her four dogs were sick, losing hair and not eating. She had nowhere to turn, and was overwhelmed. She was concerned she’d have to surrender the dogs to animal control.

We visited wit…

Top 10 Transformations of 2017

Lonely. Homeless. Afraid. Each of these pets faced an uncertain fate—that is, until they were rescued into the Gateway Pet Guardians family. As we approach the holiday season, we look back and reflect on some of our favorite rescue transformations of the year. Many of these images are graphic, but these are the realities that we face on a daily basis. Thank you to the rescuers, fosters,…

Kitten Playtime and Enrichment

It’s important to provide for our feline friends’ mental well-being, in addition to their physical well-being. Cats have natural behaviors (such as pouncing, scratching, and playing), and need outlets to express those behaviors. To enrich their stay in foster care, we provide our cats and kittens with a variety of toys, perches, training, and fun games.

Thanks to our friends at…

The Foundation assists animal welfare organizations with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of animals in shelters and rescues through pet adoption, spay/neuter programs, microchipping…

How to Build a Community Cat House

As we work with community, we have seen an increase in the stray and homeless cat population in the Metro East. After speaking with residents, we learned that the cats are often dumped, homeless and hungry. Individuals in the community take it upon themselves to care for the hungry cats and kittens. But in some situations, the 1-2 community cats they care for quickly turn into 20-30 cats…

We are incredibly excited and grateful to Petco Foundation for helping us save more lives. Special thanks to Eliza for submitting her…

Happy Tail: Work-Out Buddy

Happy Tail written by Nicole Cameli.
I adopted Dill from Gateway Pet Guardians in November of 2013. I had never owned a dog and didn’t put much thought into owning a dog until about two years before adopting Dill. In May 2011, I had a heart ablation to fix an abnormality in my heart’s electrical pathways. My symptoms were triggered by exercise, so I went from a Division I college soccer player…
