In January, Gateway Pet Guardians received a call from a Metro East resident about a neighborhood stray. The dog had been hanging around her house, but overnight, she had given birth to five puppies in her dog’s doghouse! Without hesitation, we welcomed the mama dog and her five puppies into the Gateway Pet Guardians family. The mama was named Kaldi, and her five babies were called the “coffee litter.”

KaldiKaldi spent several weeks in a foster home nursing her puppies, but once they were old enough to be weaned and adopted, she needed to find a foster home to help her continue her journey. Peyton and Philip Nosse had just joined the GPG Foster Family, and were eager to get their first foster!

When Kaldi first went to live with the Nosses, she had some severe separation anxiety. But luckily, Peyton and Philip’s work schedules make it so she’s never alone for long periods of time. The couple works on crate training every day with Kaldi, showing her that the crate is a safe place. And slowly, Kaldi has warmed up to the idea of the crate! She has also gained confidence, and learned to play with their resident dog in her short stay in their home.

Peyton says her experience with Kaldi has been exciting and fulfilling, and she’s loved every minute of it. “Our favorite thing about Kaldi is that she is just a very sweet and loving dog! She wants to cuddle on the couch all day! She would lay in your lap all day if you let her.” The Nosses have helped Kaldi overcome many obstacles, and are excited to see what the future brings.
