We received a frantic call from a pet owner concerned about her tiny puppy, Zuri. Zuri suddenly started shaking and acting lethargic–not her happy-go-lucky self. We worked with Zuri’s mom to get her to a full-service vet to figure out what was wrong.
We ran some x-rays and a few tests, but couldn’t find anything visibly wrong with Zuri except dropped glucose levels. We believed she might have experienced a liver shunt, which is common in small breed dogs. We made plans to run a special test the following day to see if this was the issue.
The next day, however, Zuri started to improve. She started eating and drinking again and gained her strength back. To this day, we still don’t know what the cause of her decline was, but we believe her tiny body might have experienced some type of trauma that sent her into shock. A few days of fluids and hospitalization was all she needed to gain her strength back and return home to her mom, who was so happy when she was released from the hospital!
