February brought some much-appreciated assistance for the Gateway Pet Guardians Spay/Neuter Program thanks to our friends at the Animal Protective Association (APA). Last year, the APA established a Fix-a-Bull Program that provides for pitbulls and pit mixes to be spayed or neutered free of charge, as well as given vaccinations and microchips. Because pitbulls are the breed most often euthanized or turned over to shelters, and least likely to be adopted, the APA is hoping to reduce the number of unwanted litters across the St. Louis area as well as the number of pitbulls finding their way to shelters where they have an increased risk of euthanization. GPG shares a similar mission in reducing the number of stray and neglected dogs in the Metro East through rescue, education, and resources.

Gateway Pet Guardians is now utilizing the Fix-a-Bull Program for a few community owned pitbulls on the east side each month. The dogs are still spayed/neutered at Carol House Quick Fix Pet Clinic, so the process for our community members and GPG staff hasn’t changed, which makes implementation a breeze! The cost savings for GPG means we can fix more owned dogs and cats, as well as offer other services, such as microchips and deworming, that we couldn’t always offer before due to costs. It’s a win for all the pets on the east side that wouldn’t be possible without all three agencies working together – GPG providing the outreach and transportation, APA providing the funding for pitbulls, and CHQF providing the low-cost and streamlined wellness services.

Check out some of the happy pitbulls that have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped recently through the Fix-a-Bull Program!
