Imagine waking up and having to choose between food for your pet or food for yourself when you make your way to the grocery store in the morning. Or having the money to pay for dog food, but no transportation to get you to the nearest pet supply store. This is the reality for many residents in East St. Louis and surrounding areas. At Gateway Pet Guardians, we strive to eliminate decisions like this by providing the resources necessary to care for pets, so residents can better care for both themselves and their animals. East St. Louis has a population of 26,790, with a median household income of $19,856. 45.4% of residents live below the poverty line. It’s a community in need of help, but not just financially. East St. Louis is what we call a ‘resource desert,’ with no veterinary clinics or pet stores and very few grocery stores available to obtain quality pet food. Even if residents are financially able to care for their pets, there are few resources within the community they can rely on. The GPG Community Outreach Program strives to ensure that pet owners have the resources they need to provide their pets with a long, happy and healthy life. The goal of the program is to empower pet owners to keep pets in their homes and out of area shelters.
The Community Outreach Program is just one of the ways that GPG is eliminating homelessness for animals in the Metro East St. Louis area. Over the past 13 years, Gateway Pet Guardians has saved the lives of thousands of dogs and cats through rescue, rehabilitation and adoption. Since 2012, outreach efforts have made an even larger impact on the number of lives saved by offering spay/neuter services, vaccinations, pet supplies and emergency pet care to loving pet owners. Today, the landscape of the community has changed so drastically that the stray animal population is almost non existent.
On October 20, we will be celebrating at our 7th annual gala at Artworks in the Delmar Loop spotlighting the accomplishments, volunteers, fosters, supporters, and lives saved. We would like to invite you to be a part of this wonderful night by partnering with us to make a difference. As a sponsor you will receive special recognition, raise awareness and invest in our mission.
Animals have always been a source of inspiration and creativity. The Soiree for Strays Charity Gala and Art Show celebrates the loving bond between animals and humans while raising awareness about animal welfare issues and giving attendees an intimate look into the lives of those who have lived on the streets and survived against all odds. Stories of love and tales of hope will be told through the eyes of many local Artists.
Will you help us make a difference in the lives of the people and animals we help?
