MLK Day in the Community

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Following in Dr. King’s footsteps, Gateway Pet Guardians hosted a day of service focused on helping pet owners in the Metro East. Fifteen volunteers made 45 stops, spending 5 hours in the blustery cold delivering pet supplies and visiting residents. Supplies delivered included doghouses, tie-outs, indoor crates, collars, leashes, and flea and tick preventative.  The Community Outreach Team at Gateway Pet Guardians works to provide resources to pet owners in the community, empowering pet owners to keep pets in their homes and out of area shelters.

Volunteer Sara Cordevant reflects on one of the stops from the afternoon. “The woman in the home felt she needed to surrender their dog, but the man was in tears because he wanted to keep her. Instead, we worked with the family to keep their dog in their loving home. She’ll be spayed and receive vaccinations through our Spay/Neuter Program, and we’ll work with the family to fix the hole in their fence to keep her from escaping. They were so thankful and appreciative of everything! This man went from total sadness to like a kid on Christmas Day.”

Our Community Outreach Program works with the community year-round, providing much needed supplies and resources to pet owners in the Metro East. If you’d like to learn more about our program, visit www.gatewaypets.com/community-outreach.
