Saint Louis, MO, November 19, 2012 – Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has awarded $15,000 to local animal rescue Gateway Pet Guardians to aid the organization in its effort to support low cost spay/neuter options for citizens of East St. Louis and surrounding communities.

In addition to animal rescue, Gateway Pet Guardians focuses on educating the community it serves about proper pet care and resources to aid residents in finding affordable health care for their pets. As part of their community education and awareness efforts, the organization provides low cost spay/neuter clinics for East St. Louis residents through the Carol House Quick Fix Clinic in South St. Louis.

“We hold monthly spay/neuter clinics in which residents can sign up ahead of time, and we will pick up their animal from a designated location in East St. Louis, transport it to the Quick Fix Clinic, have the pet spayed or neutered, and return it to that location,” explains Executive Director Jamie Case. “It’s been pretty hectic scheduling transports for so many animals back and forth. We have to have multiple vehicles and volunteers because each car can only hold one to two animals.”

The group plans to remedy this by using the Purina grant to purchase a transport van. The van will allow the organization to transport more animals in fewer trips, using less resources and resulting in an efficient program that spays and neuters more pets in the East St. Louis area.

“A large part of our mission, in addition to rescue, is preventing unwanted litters so that we don’t have to rescue anymore,” says President Julia Mittelstadt. “We’re really working toward putting a dent in the number of dogs roaming the streets in that area. This van and this program are going to help us reach that goal.”
