Six months ago, Art and Jen Knepper found themselves at the Gateway Pet Guardians Emergency Shelter. Eager and excited to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals, they submitted their applications and started doing regular shifts. They fell in love with each dog they encountered, and loved spending time with them. Saddened by the fact that many of the dogs were longer-term residents at the shelter, they decided to submit an application to foster, with the intent of bringing shelter dogs home a few weekends here and there to give them time to relax in a home.
Shortly after they were approved to foster, they learned that one of their favorite shelter dogs was in need of a new foster. Krewe, an adorable little gray pit bull, had wiggled her way into their hearts. Jen reflects on their decision to foster her: “You just can’t say no to that face. Or at least I couldn’t!” Instead of fostering on a temporary basis as planned, they decided to bring Krewe into their home full-time and help her find her forever family.
Since Krewe came to live with them, every day is a new adventure. She is a laugh-out-loud, lovable little pup that is loyal to her core. Since she went to live with Art and Jen, she has learned how to walk on a leash and knows the commands no, down, inside, sit, shake, crate, and stay. Krewe gets free reign in their backyard in the evenings, where she gets zoomies and races around. She is even able to co-exist with chickens by avoiding their side of the yard!
Jen has enjoyed every moment with Krewe. She says, “Our favorite thing about fostering is giving her the chance to be a pup. She didn’t ask for a life without a home, so we love her as if she is our own and she has flourished so much.”
With Krewe in their lives, Jen’s favorite time of the day is in the mornings when she is still in bed and Art has taken Krewe out and fed her. She comes in and puts her paws and head on the bed and snuggles into Jen’s arms for about 10-15 minutes. Her snuggles are the best, and it’s the perfect way to begin each morning!
